Home to REDFISH POINT REALTY, Cape Coral is one of the youngest cities in Southwest Florida. It was incorporated August of 1970, which makes us 43 years young. Cape Coral is a diverse community bringing visitors from all over the world to enjoy a carefree lifestyle in what we believe is paradise. Redfish Point as the area was called, got its name from the REDFISH, Red Snapper and Tarpon Snook that folks came to fish out of "The Point", at the tip of the peninsula. Redfish Point is located where the Cape Coral Yacht Club Basin and adjacent homes now stand.
Cape Coral is one of the fastest growing areas in Florida, being the 3rd largest city in land mass geographically in the state. The city is on the Gulf Coast or Lee Island Coast and is bordered by the Caloosahatchee River on the East and Matlacha Pass on the West. Cape Coral is right across the Calooshatchee River from Fort Myers and about 90 minutes south of Sarasota. We enjoy on average, 355 days of sunshine throughout the year. Can any state in the North boast such numbers when it comes to sunshine?
Two brothers from Baltimore, MD, Jack and Leonard Rosen decided they wanted to purchase land to develop, so, they spent two weeks flying over Southwest Florida searching for that perfect place. When they flew over the peninsula known as Redfish Point, it is said that coins were tossed out of the window of the low flying plane and said, "it won't know what hit it" when I am done. They were land speculators who purchased 103 squre miles of property in 1957, believing that the property's location on the Gulf Coast provided definitely for abundant sunshine and almost endless opportunities for waterfront living. They laid out the community and created more than 400 miles of canals for our "Waterfront Wonderland". "The Cape", as locals call it, has more canals than any other city in the world including Venice, Italy.
The Rosen's believed that they would sell most of the lots to people who would make monthly payments, eventually build a home and then retire to at a later date. They believed the development company would have time to build future amenities that were promised. This is the only thing they were wrong about. Most prospective buyers wanted to move down right away, they were not interested in waiting to enjoy the lifestyle.
The Rosen's began an all out massive marketing campaign that resulted in the sale of nearly all of the 350,000 residential building sites to people who lived in other states in the US and other countries like England and Germany. Celebrities were brought to Cape Coral to show that it was hip to be here. Among the many celebrities to wander our shores was Bob Hope who could be seen golfing, the stars of the popular television show Route 66, Martin Milner and Glenn Corbett, Bridge Over the River Kwai star Sessue Hayakawa. Anita Bryant, Hugh Downs and their families, Jimmy Nelson, Phyllis Diller and Jack E. Leonard to name a few came on public relations visits. Movies and television shows were produced right here in our own back yard. Actress Kim Novak's parents lived on Palm Tree Boulevard near the country club. Everyone from all walks of life fell in love with the idea of Cape Coral.
Back in 1959, a waterview lot cost $990, a waterfront lot cost $1990 and a riverfront site cost $3390. Riverfront sites gave you direct water access to the Gulf of Mexico for boating and were sold at a premium then and it holds true to today. You could purchase any building lot back then for $20 down and $20 a month. Again, the idea was to have the income monthly to build the golf courses, country clubs and hotels, before anyone was ready to build on the lots. A two bedroom, one bath house cost $10,990 to build at the time, and a three bedroom, three bath home cost $26,250. Model homes were given away on game shows like The Price is Right, Queen for a Day and Concentration. What a great marketing tool, the Rosens were way ahead of their time in their thinking.
Before the Cape Coral Bridge was built in 1964, you had a 20 mile ride to Fort Myers for a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk or to get medical care. Some people liked the quiet solitude of not having the bridge connect to Fort Myers, while others relished the idea of the bridge connecting them to "big city" civilization.
The Rosen brothers vision became a major success and REDFISH POINT which is now Cape Coral is where we call home. It has been said that our history is unique, part Wild West and part Hollywood, and all with a tropical flavor. You can smell that pineapple in the air.
What more could you want from a slice of paradise, a place to call home and one of the best vacation spots in Southwest Florida rolled into one.
