December 31, 1995, the day the town of Fort Myers Beach was born and so it goes, Sun, Sand and Surf. All things family fun, vacations and wedding destinations. The town has not yet reached 20 years of age, but the history of Estero Island dates back over 2,000 years to the Calusa Indians. The Calusa's fought the colonization of the Spanish conquerors and the notable conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon. Ponce de Leon would eventually be mortally wounded in 1521 by the Calusa Indians. As in all other parts of Florida, the Calusa Indians met their end through increasing hostilities, warfare, disease and economic upheaval.
During the seventeenth century, the terriroty changed hands from England to Spain and between those times, Cuban fishsermen built seasonal fishing villages known as Ranchos, including those on Estero Island. Active trade was established between the Ranchos, Cuba and the Creek Indians. Florida became the 27th state in the US and many of these families stayed on and blended with the American population moving into Southwest Florida. This area is a very diverse and welcoming place.
The first real American settlers followed the Homestead Act of 1862. William Case resided on a Calusa Shell Mound at the end of Connecticut Street which is the highest point on Fort Myers Beach. Case developed the first housing subdivision and cottage rental industry on the island. By 1914 all of the island property was homesteaded and the only industry that prevailed along side fishing, gardening, and a hotel was a sawmill operated by the Koreshan Unity, which was a communal society based on the mainland of Estero. You can visit the Koreshan State Park today in your travels. It is located on U.S. 41, the Tamiami Trail.
Development on Estero Island, then called Crescent Beach, was slow until Florida gained national attention in 1920 as a vacation destination.
A toll bridge was built in 1921 to connect the beach town to the mainland of Estero/Fort Myers. Progress stagnated after some severe weather hit, hurricanes to be exact, and the people became afraid of the climate promises without the warning of the hurricanes destruction. We now have a time of year dedicated as HURRICANE SEASON, June 1st to November 30th. Unlike the holiday season, hurricane season prompts us to buy plywood as well as Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations. From Halloween and Thanksgiving to Easter, our population swells in massive numbers, from folks we call Snow Birds. 1950 brought modernization with the building of the first swimming pool, the invention of air conditioning, and the discovery of "pink gold" or shrimp off the shore which sparked a whole new industry for the area.
Fort Myers Beach is the home of beautiful beaches, an island kind of mentality, spring Break, volleyball matches, and the famed Sand Sculpting Contest that is held each and every year. There are unique local shops and restaurants where you can buy souvenirs as well as eat a delicious meal. You can watch the gorgeous sunsets from the Pier or fish, swim or sun bathe.
Development which continues today, allows the year round residents, which are many, and the seasonal visitors and residents to live in harmony while enjoying the beach, and that idyllic climate promise of sunshine, blue skies. Don't worry Mon, be ...................(you fill in the blank).
