In Matlacha Florida

Matlacha Florida

Matt-La-Shay Is a small town where times change slowly, but yet the small town values have remained.  It doesn't take long to get into the spirit of Matlacha.  If you pronounce the name of this quaint town correctly, it rhymes with "sashay" as in proceeding nonchalanty, so Matt La Shay is what you say and the name depicts the speed at which we move.

It is located off the mainland of Cape Coral where the pace and scale suit a laid back, restful, peace-and-love lifestyle.

It is Rural Florida at its' finest, where wildlife remains plentiful, green space and heritage co-exist hand in hand.  It is the best of both worlds.  Away on its' own and left to its' own devices, yet close enough to the hustle and bustle of the "big city" for creature comforts.  You can go home at night to the sound of crickets and frogs to lull you to sleep after visiting one the near by towns for your fun and recreation.

Most of us who have visited Florida on vacation, remember the communities that typically come to represent Florida, which are the coastal towns, glitzy golf resorts and beach destinations.  This is not Matlacha.  This is middle America, where farms, and lots of green still exist, and they are happy for it.

It is said that a while back "two fellas" were hired to pace off the building sites and lots east of the bridge across Matlacha Pass.  One gent stood a mere 5' 3" tall while the other towered a full 6' 4".  There should be no surprise then when the folks at the bait shops, cottages and galleries along the road's north side can gossip by leaning their heads out their windows, while to the south, a friendly chat might mean having to walk a spell to a neighbor's porch.  But a path to a friends home is never to long, so no one minds.

In Seminole, Matlacha means either "big warrior" or "junior warrior".  Others say it means "knee-deep water".  No one really cares what the actual translation means, just that Matlacha is a small town with a big heart.

The common appeal to everyone is the integrity of the town and the heritage that they hold on to so dear even today.
