In Punta Gorda Florida

Punta Gorda Florida

Just like Naples, areas of Punta Gorda are located in Lee County so we claim her as one of our own, because we can and more importantly we want to claim her.  She is just up the road a piece from Cape Coral and Fort Myers.  A lovely Sunday afternoon drive.

Punta Gorda gets its name from the Spanish, which means "FAT POINT", the land where the Peace River meets Charlotte Harbor.  There are many historic buildings including the old Charlotte County Courthouse and nine (9) other places that are on the national Register of Historic Places.

The Howard brothers were the first settlers to come to Punta Gorda after the Civil War.  Ten years later the railroad followed and Punta Gorda, Florida began to grow into the wonderful town it is today.  The town was at the end of the line for the rail system then, so when tourists came down they tended to stay a while, some for a lifetime.  The town was incorporated in 1887.

As most of the other "End of the Road Towns", of their day, some rough and tough characters tended to settle there, hoping they wouldn't be found.  There were reportedly 40 murders in the years bewtween 1890 and 1904.  40 murders in 14 years, in todays time frame that was a drop in the bucket, but I guess back then, maybe not so much.

The town settled down as the years passed and the rough and tough either killed each other off or faded into the sunset.  Punta Gorda became and remains a quaint, wonderful place to recreate and call home.  A cool place to visit is Fisherman's Village, which is built out over Charlotte Harbor just west of downtown.  Shops, homes, marina, restaurants, it is all there.

In 2004, Hurricane Charley blew in right over Burnt Store Marina through town and did quite a bit of damage.  Lucky for him, the downtown Indian survived the storm but has since been moved to a different location.  We think he has gotten used to the change and his new home.

Punta Gorda's community spirit is a wonderful thing.  Come and experience it, you won't regret the time spent in our pleasant town.
